Saturday July 26 and Sunday July 27
FIGMENT Boston is returning for a fifth year of fun and revelry on the Rose Kennedy Greenway! Founded in 2007 on New York City’s Governors Island, what began as a few thousand enthusiasts enjoying a handful of participatory art projects on a sunny July afternoon has ballooned into a multi-day, multi-city event that drew over 30,000 participants in NYC, Boston, Jackson, MS and Detroit in 2011. In 2014, FIGMENT seeks to continue its mission to offer free, inclusive and participatory art to entire communities, removing the barriers of museum and gallery walls and entrance fees and blurring the lines between those who create and those who enjoy art.
For a second year FIGMENT Boston is happy to host FIGMENT After Dark in Dewey Square on Saturday July 26 from 6pm-11pm, the perfect centerpiece to a weekend of fun, free art! Dance to music and enjoy spontaneous roving performances as well as some special installation art perfect for nighttime!
FIGMENT is an explosion of creative energy. It’s a free, annual celebration of participatory art and culture where everything is possible. For two days this summer, we will transform the Rose Kennedy Greenway into a large-scale collaborative artwork, and then it’s gone, without a trace.

FIGMENT Boston, now in its fifth year, offers opportunities for both emerging and established artists to showcase original works and create something that gets people to interact, to participate and collaborate with each other! Your FIGMENT project can be anything...A game, an experiment, a request, a challenge, a guided meditation, a performance based on audience input, a sculpture that moves or responds, a heart-stopping technological innovation that changes the way we see the world… Anything that gets people working and playing and creating together.
FIGMENT welcomes works in every imaginable medium including sculpture, installation, performance, music, workshops, games, experiences, site-specific pieces, social experiments, and anything else you can dream of. And now for exciting FIGMENT Boston news for 2014:
We’re gearing up for our main event, July 26-27th on the Rose Kennedy Greenway in Boston. With this in mind, we have a few transitions going on with the crew responsible for bringing you these amazing events. Jason Turgeon, the man who brought FIGMENT to Boston, and FIGMENT Boston producer for the past 4 years, is passing the torch to Anne Lodick, who has been working with FIGMENT Boston for the past 3 years as Communications Director and co-producer of FIGMENT First Night. Thank you Jason! We are so grateful for all that you have done for FIGMENT and for public art in Boston!
FIGMENT Boston would not have been possible without the massive contributions of the volunteers and artists. FIGMENT is growing and we’re looking for more people to help year-round with bringing participatory art and events to public spaces in Boston. If you’re interested in being part of the team of organizers, send us an email at email@example.com. We are excited for our summer event and look forward to seeing what you bring in 2014!
FIGMENT is a gift that we all give to the Boston community, with our time, our effort, love, and financial support. Your participation and generous donations help to make it all happen. If you had a great time at FIGMENT and want to keep us going strong, please consider supporting FIGMENT Boston by joining the FIGMENT 100!
People who join the FIGMENT 100 help sustain us year-round by sending $5 to $50 a month. Please donate to FIGMENT BOSTON online, either as a one-time donation or by joining the FIGMENT 100. You can make a huge difference to FIGMENT with a small monthly donation and the more people on board, the merrier! Tell your friends that you’re part of the FIGMENT 100 and invite them to join you!
Call for Participation: FIGMENT First Night 2014
On December 31, 2013, FIGMENT Boston will join First Night Boston, the nation’s oldest celebration of New Year’s Eve, for a special “event within an event.” First Night is attended annually by more than 250,000 people who come to celebrate the arts in downtown Boston. FIGMENT Boston’s summer event has been a huge success over the last four summers, showcasing the work of hundreds of local artists and performers, with approximately 20,000 visitors in 2013. This will be FIGMENT’s first collaboration with First Night, and our largest nighttime event ever.
FIGMENT First Night will take place on the northeast corner of the Boston Common. Framed by the dramatic backdrop of the Massachusetts State House, the site is ideally located near the Park Street MBTA station and dozens of major attractions. At First Night, FIGMENT will serve as one of the anchors of the activities on the Common, along with the family fireworks, a music stage, ice sculptures, and the end point of the First Night Parade. The FIGMENT event will take place from 7:30 PM on Tuesday, December 31st, 2013 to 12:01 AM on Wednesday, January 1st, 2014.
Unlike the FIGMENT Boston summer event on the Rose Kennedy Greenway, the FIGMENT First Night event will offer funding to selected projects. Funding will range from $250-$2500 per project. Projects that do not request any funding will also be considered.
We are excited to announce FIGMENT is now accepting proposals for FIGMENT First Night 2014!
Submit a project before 11:59 PM EST on Friday, November 1!
