There are over 80 artists participating in FIGMENT Boston this year. Over the next week, we will continue to give you a little preview of some of the great projects that you will see on the Rose Kennedy Greenway.
Featured Project: Fiber Fort by Katie Loesel
Participants will help create a fabulous Fiber Fort. It will start as a wooden, dome-shaped skeleton and plenty of fabric, rope, and various accoutrements will be provided. During FIGMENT, a cozy igloo fort will be wrapped, tied, and otherwise woven together. Materials can be tied, woven, stretched, or attached however you like, and will result in an eclectic, expressive skin for the igloo.
Is the Fiber Fort something you have done before?
No, my art usually involves works on paper, but I have been wanting to expand and explore new things. I am excited about working 3 dimensionally again, and the opportunity to spread out and not have limiting size constraints.
The Fiber Fort is clearly not paper, what materials are you using for it?
All the material that will be the skin of our fort came from my and my husband’s own recycled t-shirts – we had quite a collection going!
Why did you decide to bring the Fort to FIGMENT?
I went to FIGMENT Boston last year and it was a lot of fun. That kept the event on my radar, so when I saw you were accepting submissions, I was interested in becoming a part of it. I think it is great when the public has the chance to work on and see things in process – then the art becomes more accessible and understandable. It can create a buzz and excitement about art that they may not have had previously or otherwise.
FIGMENT is a free, non-profit event, and we rely grants and donations and do not accept corporate sponsorships. Please donate to FIGMENT and help support interactive and participatory art to Boston.
